Theo Gray collected nearly 1,000 element samples and took thousands of pictures of them, many on a nice black background, the better to display the elements' beauty.

¨So I had all these pictures and I thought I could make a poster,¨ he said. And what a poster! ...with the elements in their proper places, as on a wood table he had built, but represented by colorful images instead of just boring old letters and numbers.

"The rotor from a jet engine, made of titanium. A silvery fish molded from cadmium. A Hubble Space Telescope image of the Eagle nebula, which is 90 percent hydrogen. Various noble gases, xenon for instance, trapped in neon signesque versions of their symbols. An antique tin soldier. A watch face with glowing radium numbers. Here and there a picture of a famous scientist for whom some unphotographable element has been named, like Einsteinium.

¨This is art,¨ Gray said.
"The science comes into play on the back of each but the wall posters, where that side is filled with text - detail depending on the poster size - giving the basic physical data about each element (atomic weight, melting point, boiling point, and density), and perhaps a succinct description of what each sample is, along with its approximate physical size.
It could end up making elements cool, even the hot ones.
